Watched Law and Order SVU from the other night. Sharon Stone is the new DA! (And she was apparently Elliott's old partner.)   I love SVU, but the acting seemed so... stilted in that ep. EW agrees that the dialogue sucked balls.

Oh, hey, cool site: vintage letterhead. http://www.letterheady.com/

Recs! [livejournal.com profile] edibleflowers  has a lovely Jack/Ianto story up! Briar's Books - New, Used, Rare - Special Orders Available  I also done helped beta Sam's virtual series fanfic (though you don't have to read [livejournal.com profile] tw_itallchanges  for it to make sense, it helps!)  Family Secrets.  And DUDE -- go read the latest story by kel and blue_fjords: All In Good Time. Awesome.

Looking for more things to read? Try [livejournal.com profile] lipsum - she's been sharing great links!

HEY YA! (I just said that like Outkast sings it.)

I have stuff to do today, but have a couple of quickies. Hur hur.

If you went to Hurricane Who last year (and I know a lot of you did, and had an ACE ADVENTURE), be aware that there might be some odd stuff going on around it this time. It sounds like one of the organisers is not returning emails. [livejournal.com profile] mrtonylee will not be a guest and has some info about the lack of info.  Please read this if you were planning to attend this con.

[livejournal.com profile] misswinterhill  has convention reports from Supanova! She attended the GDL and Marsters panels.  Master post!

BTW, if you haven't been following the Virtual Season, her ep is up, and it's really good. I'm following the VS but am a bit behind.

Thanks for reading 99:00, you guys (and sorry for comm-spamming on Friday). It's the longest thing I've ever written; I'm not capable of the super-lengthy Big Bang-stuff, really, so I'm glad overjoyed to get some feedback on this. :)

[livejournal.com profile] dremiel is sharing her recipe for Matzo Brickle. WHY DID I NOT KNOW YOU COULD MELT CHOCOLATE OVER CRACKERS IN A PAN AND THERE IS SALT INVOLVED, ALONG WITH ALMONDS?

I am so making these. I am cooking/baking-challenged, but I actually have the ingredients for something for once. Most of the time someone posts a recipe and then I see that it requires something like "mace" or ""wrens' livers" or "dexterity" and... so much for that!

[livejournal.com profile] count_to_seven  has a drawing of Myfanwy eating snax with seagulls @ [livejournal.com profile] sad_welshman . She escaped the Hub before it blew up, ok? :D :D :D

Via racialicious, The FDA may "regulate" menthol cigarettes.  WHY DO YOU WANT TO BAN THINGS I LIKE?  What's next, slash? Menthols do not make you die faster than other cigarettes. They make you die mintier.

...take away all of my terrible guilty little pleasures, why don't you?  Isn't making them expensive bad enough?

Which is... I don't know. But I could go for some. With powdered sugar and strawberries.  Oh hey, this is kind of interesting. I had my brows waxed the other day and had a male aesthetician for the first time. Cute, too. When I told my husband I was going in for a facial in a few weeks (I have a coupon) he laughed for half an hour.

If you're a fan of Lady Gaga, there's a very comprehensive article in New York Magazine. The second I saw her, I thought, "oh, the new Madonna, in terms of reinvention."  Well, actually, I said: "Whoa. Where the hell are her pants?" I do like her songs and find them very VERY danceable.

[livejournal.com profile] odessie  has a fantastic and happy Superman video, Mr Blue Sky. It made me grin. :D

Ready for Eleven?  The new Doctor is all over UK media in preparation for the next series.

LOOK AT HIM, RUNNING. HIS HANDS ARE LIKE BLADES:

Just... everything.

I've got loads to beta and it's Monday so I have to work first because I fuckin' didn't win the lottery again!  What is this?

Will link to things I've beta-read when I have a spare hour to work up a post (they're not all up, either).

In the meantime, [livejournal.com profile] stasha2g  is doing White Collar recs.  And BEST XKCD in a while! OMG!LOL!!!  (Fanfic shout-out.) :D

(There will probably be a deluge of "fanfic sucks!LOL" comments in the comments. Letting that roll off my back.)

I'm liking the band The Nightgowns. Listening + writing is making my fic... weirder than usual.

51stcenturyfox: (Default)
Well. I think I have an idea for cosplay at Gallifrey, now.

Guess that means a trip to the hardware store to figure out how to make that collar/shoulder piece.  Hmm. I see white paint in my future.

Other stuff:

- Porn Battle tomorrow, yo!  Nick and I will put a discussion thread up as well.

- I won a fanvid from[livejournal.com profile] phaetonschariot  for the Help Haiti auction. I just have too many songs in mind and can't DECIDE. And I'm too excited to pick one. *SQUEEEEEE!*

Huh.

*tilts head*

Okay. If you don't want to write female characters, and you prefer to write m/m slash fic for whatever reason you like, cool! I like to write male relationship stories/erotica as well. It can be hot and there are many characters in my fandom with awesome dynamics together -- their gender doesn't matter to me. Plus: yay!cocks! I enjoy cocks a lot. Some people only like reading and writing about people with cocks and female sex/relationships don't interest them because they already know what that's like and sometimes, it's not really "different" enough to interest them. I don't want to write about my own life and mostly feel this way about long-term couples of any gender/orientation in canon who don't have a bit of conflict/history/relationship hot mess to spice things up. Kinda boring to me. Different strokes.

But if the stated reasons are:

-- "The female character(s) are badly-written in canon! The guys are always more interesting!"
-- "The female character in a het or poly or any relationship can't be "as equal" as a man relating to another man because of historical, institutional sexism. "If I write two guys they can be equals" !

Uh... you do... realise that in fanfiction you can write female characters better and write them into healthy, hot, sex-positive relationships even if those don't exist in the source material, right?  This is not really more farfetched than a story about two canonically straight guys falling in love with each other and running through a field of daisies and fucking all over desks and spaceships and getting m-pregnant?

"Badly-written in canon" hasn't stopped slash writers from giving any given (hot, natch) male character with two lines a vibrant back story and sexxins by writers. Nobody has to write female characters or het or femslash, and liking given male characters better than the female ones is of course up to the individual fan, but fic writers routinely FIX holes in canon:

Fanfic = making things up.

It's also totally possible for a woman to have a healthy, nonsexist relationship with a dude (or another woman, for that matter). I've had one for over a decade. "Help, help, I'm not being oppressed! Really!"

Argh. WHY do you eat posts which are full of links I have to find again, LJ? Huh?  COZ IT HATES USERNAME CODE. *thwap*

wendymr has another list of peeps volunteering fanworks to help Haiti.  Thank you, debitha, for bidding on my beta!

laridaes' (C's) reel_torchwood story, The Gulls (based on Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds)  is creepy-good! Check it out.

lefaym's partner has written her TW fic. And it's funny. :D  Mr Foxy won't write me fic! (It would just be a bad poetic ode to Gwen's melons/boots anyway. "What rhymes with taut?" So perhaps it's better just... not asking.)

[livejournal.com profile] into_the_woods  Is a new X-Files rewatch comm. YAYS! *dusts off S1 DVDs*

I have a Torchwood/X-Files crossover to rework, because it wasn't funny at all enough. That is my next task.

AND PLANNING A PORN BATTLE WITH NICK.
51stcenturyfox: (Default)
I am doing a [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti  auction donation. I think I might have started the bid too high. (It's just BETA. For charity.)  But a lot of people are offering fic already.  [livejournal.com profile] lefaym  has a list of people on her flist, many of whom you probably know, who are taking part and offering great stuff to bid on including crafts! And fanmixes!

[livejournal.com profile] amand_r  has finished her Jaws crossover for reel_torchwood, LEVIATHAN!!! Sorry. Leviathan. Dude, it's awesome. I especially liked Ianto's characterisation and snark and thought patterns here. You don't have to be super-familiar with Jaws to enjoy it, but it's even better if you are.

[livejournal.com profile] copperbadge  has a new novel ready for feedback from the internets. The first chapter of Charitable Getting is up. Who writes a novel in less than a month when it's not even NaNoWriMo? Strange awesome people, that's who.

The poll about where you write/send/archive your fic was funnnn. The vast majority of people surveyed use  Word Docs and send that to their beta and save a copy on the ol' hard drive. I'm loving Google docs so hard for everything, though.  Scrivener sounds interesting, and had I a Mac again, i'd try it out. Write Or Die just sounds like the most insane thing ever, though and I would rather carve my eyeballs out with a spork than use "kamikaze mode". I'm told it eats. Eats your words.

The Onion's AV Club has a great interview with Brian Baumgartner, who plays Kevin on The Office. I love Kevin, and the interview has a lot of insights into the characters and behind-the-scenes stuff.

Genius original here.  (He did the hard part!)

"No. No no no... Gobi!" Gwen shrieked, shaking with laughter on the sofa.

In case you missed it in the run up to the holidays. (Narrated by John "I'm better at talking when you can see my fayce making expressions" Barrowman.)

I have some recs to make later, because I've beta-read some cool-ass shiz lately.

End Of Time.

MASTER, YOU SO CRAZYCAKES. )
YES. Time Lords do chill in the Galactic Senate, [livejournal.com profile] amand_r .

*huggles!*

If you missed it, [livejournal.com profile] ask_captainjack  has a Christmas list. :D  Check his f-list; Ianto, Janet, T, Tosh, Owen and everyone have been busy!

What did Jack do between leaving Cardiff in CoE and leaving Earth? He went to Hollywood and met Zachary Quinto. [livejournal.com profile] auctorial  knows! (Check out To Leave This All Behind. OMG.)

[livejournal.com profile] curriejean 's Advent of Awesome - all of the music you heard in Torchwood -- not the instrumentals, but the pop and other snippets? HERE for your downloading pleasure. :D

And...there is more awesome stuff around, but I'm spent!

The Fanfiction Love Meme is groovy, but I'm not doing it myself. I'll try to answer some of these, but I love all of you and you should all write more fic, especially threesomes involving any of these people:

See what I did there? By the way, I would like this for Christmas

[livejournal.com profile] verasteine has some heteronormativity in slash meta for you

Mah Yuletide fic is finished! My [livejournal.com profile] reel_torchwood Breakfast At Tiffany's story is mostly there. It needs polish.

I am behind on RP stuff. [livejournal.com profile] xtricks is going to beat my ass.

Liked this planet so much I put a ring on it. Har. Um.

I just read a Rose/Gwen story well, I really liked it. I think those two would get on. Check out All That Hopping (A Multi-Dimensional Love Story) by [livejournal.com profile] magicallaw .

WTF, why didn't I know there's a [livejournal.com profile] dw_femslash comm? *joins*

From [livejournal.com profile] cruentum : John Barrowman on the Vernon Kay show. It looks to me like he's stealing Gareth's shirts.

I have RP to catch up on, and owe betaz.

Then I'm going to the mall because I need some black flats and I'm craving Cheese On A Stick. (Shut up.)

NASA has had to debunk those "the world is ending in 2012" rumors. Um. LOL. (The disaster film is coming out this weekend and I'm sure it'll be a blast. So to speak.)

I remember when I was 11 or something, picking up a paperback at a rummage sale with a "the world will end in 1978!" premise. It hadn't. So since that day, I've always thought world-ending predictions were sort of hilarious.

I admit taking some cash out of the ATM before Y2k in case my bank's computers had a case of the stupids for a day or two.

Why so gullible, internet?

In other news...

I'm terza rima, and I talk and smile.
Where others lock their rhymes and thoughts away
I let mine out, and chatter all the while.

I'm rarely on my own - a wasted day
Is any day that's spent without a friend,
With nothing much to do or hear or say.

I like to be with people, and depend
On company for being entertained;
Which seems a good solution, in the end.
What Poetry Form Are You?

Nick finally posted his final [livejournal.com profile] writerinadrawer fic and it's so goooooood.  Read it, you should.  (That was done in my Yoda voice. No, really.)

Title: Something Beautiful
Characters: Gwen Cooper, Jack Harkness
Rating: PG
Length: 4,500 words
Summary: After Torchwood, after Jack, Gwen lives her life, even as Jack comes back.

Big encouragement to all of you who signed up for NaNoWriMo. I'm not sure how you do it.  I don't have a novel in me, pals. My creative mind is like a junk drawer. Open it up and you'll find pens and rubber bands and batteries and an iPod cord and some purple envelopes. These do not make one big cohesive thing when you put them together.

Did sign up for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide , though.

So many people on my f-list are bummed, hiding from H1N1, stuck with flat beer, being bothered on bus benches or have puppies with fevers.  I want to make great big cheer bubbles with one of those giant wands, blow them all over with a fan and clap with glee as they pop on each of you with a big soapy *gwink!*

Since that's just bizarre, here's something even weirder: If I were going to start a striptease career, I'd do it to this Lou Reed Song. In fact, I'd only strip to Lou Reed songs.

The [livejournal.com profile] omnijaxual fic fest has begun! (Jack/everything besides humans). So far I've read Jack/Risen Mitten and Jack/Ianto's suit and they were awesome!

This fest rocks.  I'm writing Jack/Pris (from Blade Runner).  Eventually!

ETA: OH! YAYS! [livejournal.com profile] iamshadow 's Jack/TARDIS story, You Carry It With You (a burden, a blessing) is up. I'd been nagging her to post it because I didn't realise it was for the fest. :D It's fab!

So, I'm using Google calendar, and it's SPOOKY. It's like it knows me. Except yours says this too:

[personal profile] amand_r is in England. I'm so envious!
