When I first got into fandom, I read mostly on individual websites and archives -- this was before LJ and related platforms were popular. Or on things like yahoo groups.
Now, I generally read on LJ simply because I have so little searching time, so I review my F-list for new stories. However, I'm perfectly happy being linked to and reading wherever the story is. I don't bookmark things, generally, so finding stuff is usually my limit. I hate delicious, though -- the only thing I use it for is ego stroking ... I got there to see how many people have linked to my stories.
The first time I read your fic, I saw it on insanejournal, and I couldn't figure out how to comment... and I really wanted to, because I loved it.
I try to bookmark on delicious, but forget 98% of the time and didn't bother because Sam bookmarks the stuff I would, usually and it drives me nuts later when I want to find something I read six months ago. Forget to add things to memories too, which is why I have to search your journal when I want to read the Gwen/Ianto crossdressing story. Which is um, fairly often. I FAIL.
I haven't achieved cross-accounts yet, so I'm more likely to miss something if it ain't on LJ. Is there a magic journal platform for the terminally timid who NEVER KEEP UP ON COMMENTING?? Aargh, I'm so behind.
I am just a jerk. I ADMIT IT. A lazy jerk. I will read it wherever it's posted, but I probably won't comment if it's on AO3 because even though I do have an account there, it logs me out persistantly and I am too annoyed to keep logging back in. SORRY.
I treat it more like an archive for older stories, meself.
It does log you out. Actually, everything logs me out except for Youtube and gmail. I have to re-log into LJ and stuff daily. Not sure why. But I come here anyway.
I wasn't sure how to interpret the first option on question 2 - I have an LJ account (obviously) but don't have one on either Dreamwidth or AO3 and have no intention of getting one. So LJ it is - and I notice you didn't mention Teaspoon; I'm just as likely to read/comment on Teaspoon as I am on LJ. Just nowhere else.
(And then, of course, it depends what the fic is about *g* If it's Jack/Doctor or OT3, I'm all over it; if it's Ianto... not so much. Not even for you!)
I know, we all have our fic genres. :) I don't fancy Doctor/Master, for one. I like it in fanvids though, weirdly.
Yeah, Teaspoon! I sometimes do post things there, but I don't like not controlling the background. I do forget to log in, as well, and then I forget my password.
A short fic I'll read anywhere, a longer (chaptered) fic I'm somewhat more likely to tackle if it's either posting somewhere that I can have it pester me as new bits come out (IE favoriting on Teaspoon or tracking here), or can set to 'read all at once' if it's completely posted (IE 'story view' on Teaspoon or... um, whatever the equivalent is on AO3, I know there is one because it drives me nuts when I go to post stories there). So... kind of depends. As to commenting, having to jump through hoops like having an account somewhere I don't already frequent (FF.net I am looking at you) is a definite deterrent. Also, bizarrely, is the fic's rating -- the higher it is, the more I'm going to have to like the story to overcome that feeling that the little old ladies in the knitting guild are going to manage to stumble into my "comments left" stats or something and start clutching their pearls at me at the next meeting... {sigh}
Oh good point about reading things all at once. I USUALLY wait until something's all up before reading it, or I'll get antsy waiting. The exception is if I KNOW it's finished already or just can't resist the pairing or something.
Story view on Teaspoon is great. Clicking through journals to read a lot of chapters is much more difficult.
I'd never thought about that... the comments on more adult fics, but this is pretty far from my real name. :D
My favorite places are LJ and Teaspoon. LJ is good because I'm always checking my flist, and Teaspoon is good because I check the queue almost every day so I see most of what goes through there.
Dreamwidth just doesn't have enough activity for me to remember that it exists most of the time, and AO3 frankly has TOO much material and not enough organization for me to want to visit.
If I have to log in somewhere aside from LJ or Teaspoon to comment, then I probably won't do it.
Doesn't AO3 make you enter your email to comment? I don't really like doing that. I don't have an account there and I'm kind of ignorant about the whole place. Although I said I'd read anywhere. I have a non-updated DW account. I should do something about that. Although probably no one looks at it anyway. I digress.
I'm not sure; I got an account there for Yuletide and hadn't used it before at all. I've commented on a few White Collar fics there which people linked me to, and Yuletide, but only a few others.
It's really easy to add stuff to your favorites there with bookmarks, so there's that.
I only have an LJ account, so I usually don't leave comments at DW or AO3 - unless I can do it without logging in and then I'll leave my LJ name so the person knows who I am.
I've mostly been using the DW account to comment on things (not necessarily fic, but meta or whatever).
I think I've only had two comments from people on DW fic, but they're not up there right away either -- it's after the window when folks comment on stuff because it's on their f-list that day or the day before (before it's lost in the shuffle!)
I'll read anywhere and comment anywhere. I don't know if you can get into back-and-forth discussions with authors or other readers (not that that happens often anyway) at AO3 though, which leads me to prefer LJ or DW.
Agree on that! Conversations seem to flow better on journals than on archived comment areas, because... I don't know. People are used to chatting back and forth in comments?
It feels more like you're hanging out in someone's kitchen chatting when on a journal. :)
I have a DW account, but I really like reading on LJ. However, if I know a fic is somewhere else I don't mind reading it there too? As long as I can find it. I have an AO3 code, I just haven't forced myself to use it yet. /lazy
And the commenting thing... I hardly do it because I'm such a mouse, haha, but I tend to only comment on LJ. That's more out of habit, though. But I don't have any serious investment in that, so if I want to say something, I'll find a way to say it no matter where the post is :)
if i don't have an account, and you can't leave openID or anon comments, then i probably won't leave one - but since it's you and XT you guys will def hear from me no matter where it's posted ;) for posting - i like Ao3's format: that, lj and dw are all good (as long as ppl don't post it in PDF ONLY, that is annoying b/c i don't dl those)
I'm happy to read fic anywhere, and I'm making a special effort to comment over at AO3 at the moment, because commenting seems to happen less there than on LJ.
I think both have their advantages, which is why I'm currently using both. :)

If EVERYBODY moved to Dreamwidth, I'd use it more, but I can't follow two f-lists at once. F-lists are my entertainment/surfing.

Date: 2010-03-27 06:28 am (UTC)Ao3 has a really easy-to-read format, IMHO.
PDF only is a no. I don't like downloading things anyway; my computer is slow enough without a bunch of fic files.
Some people have linked to Google docs for stories, which is interesting, but yeah, nowhere to comment.
