[livejournal.com profile] aeron_lanart threw me: Torchwood, John Hart, Jack Harkness, fanfic, fandom squee

1. Torchwood. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. Oh, in nearly every way, even though it sometimes drives me nuts with inconsistency and some sort of indecipherable unknown story arc, if one even exists past the next few episodes. RTD, do you have a show bible? Heard not.

2.John Hart. Loved this character from the moment he stepped through the rift. I probably have a tendency to see the good side/humanity of villains and enjoy exploring what made them into what they've become. I still haven't figured that part out yet, but want to fill in the gaps. Also, his messed-up unrequited love and longing thing for Jack is fascinating, in a Doctor/Master sort of way. "I'm from your past, I know you better than anyone alive, including your terrible side, but I love you anyway. What, you don't want to come with me? I'll chuck you off of a building, then, you bastard. But... I do love you! Um. I'm sorry. Could I have a job? No?" *sad face* I'm hoping that he comes back in any capacity in S4.

3. Jack Harkness. There are icons with the phrase "Big Damn Hero" emblazoned on them, and this is what Jack is. Larger-than-life but also flawed, mysterious and complicated. He tries to do the right thing now despite whatever his past was like, but he's not always sure what that is, and I like that in a hero. Plus, he's omnisexual like John and can be shipped with almost anyone. Love the coat. Who doesn't?

4. fanfic. This goes back to John and Jack. I've not had the urge to write fic about characters or been INTO a fandom since The X-Files, and that was quite a long time ago, though I've read bushels of fanfic since that time (primarily Jossverse stuff). Because of that long gap, I feel like a n00b at fic-writing and am a beginner at slash fic, but it's an all-consuming hobby because you can block scenes in your head, no matter where you are. It's beyond amazing that so many people share their (often really incredibly great and better than the source material) fanworks, convention reports and encouragement, especially when we have to wait too long between series/seasons. AHEM, TORCHWOOD.

5. fandom squee. Isn't that the point of communing with other fans... sharing love for (and sometimes disappointment in) a program? Debate can be satisfying but if you harsh the squee of teeming fen it makes Myfanwy cry. I dislike infighting and ship wars and the like, unless it's in good, mutual fun and the parties are actually enjoying themselves ala political debate boards. I hate conflict in real life, let alone fandom, which is supposed to be a kick, right? If we all crocheted for a hobby, someone yanking at the yarn skein all the time would be a pain in the ass, not something to celebrate. Be excellent to each other. (I think that was someone's fandom secret.)

Plus: This is a great John Hart dialogue remix made by Melia. [livejournal.com profile] sueworld2003 posted a link this morning. It's just 1:40 and really worth checking out, IMHO. I'd like to hear more of these; they're fun!

I love John and Jack so much. Their relationship is toxic and unworkable and perfect. :D
