...so I was working on a piece of fic involving guess who (points up) and got stuck. I blame using a notebook instead of the computer, because it screws up my sense of order, writing things with PENS. Now back to the original setting and absinthe. Because. John Hart.

Boche had known a joiner who had stripped himself stark naked in the rue Saint-Martin and died doing the polka — he was an absinthe-drinker.

So. Absinthe research led to arguments from the Ist Century BCE Lucretius poem De Rerum Natura : It is a statement of personal responsibility in a world in which everyone is driven by hungers and passions with which they were born and do not understand.

Odd prompts/structure for naughty fan fiction about two guys from the 51st Century. Probably.

Unrelated but funny: the John Barrowman peen pic. Likely not his, but "being dickrolled" has now entered the LJ lexicon.

Now, I'd really like to know just how you got from absinthe to Lucretius. I mean, in dictionary roulette you could easily have just missed Lucifer instead. But I sense subtlety in the offing here. Expound!

Or maybe that's the kind of connection that arises when you write by hand? It's hell for structure but great for random insight, I find. :)

And speaking of dictionaries, haven't we all been waiting for the perfect Barrowmanian adjective? "Dickrolled" is overdue. Or over-something.

I know! (I really hope that's not his. But he does tend to show it off.)

Bizarrely, I'm actually able to backtrack the reference. The absinthe wikipedia entry to a direct link to Lucretius:

Wikipedia is worse (or better) than the TV Tropes website for losing time. ;)
