Date: 2010-10-17 05:10 am (UTC)She doesn't want to be a Disney Princes. She doesn't want to be Strawberry Shortcake, or Dora, or Batman, or any character from some movie, cartoon, or tv show. She doesn't want to get a canned costume and dress up as someone else who exists independently of her. She wants to be a thing, a person who does something - something adventurous, requiring wit and bravery. (and moral turpitude, but whatever, it's Hallowe'en.)
It's moments like this that make me feel like the draconian strictures I have on television are paying off. Her ability to imagine her life is not yet circumscribed by a corporation who wants to dictate the flavour and breadth of her dreaming.

Date: 2010-10-17 12:31 pm (UTC)I remember when I was a kid, and the costumes were kind of general without being franchise-specific, you know? Black cat (leotards and ears and tail) or Pirate or if you were lazy, Bum. :D
