12 reasons why I'm happy Torchwood is coming back

1. More Captain Jack.   There's really only one omnisexual, immortal, time-travelling adventurer in media, and we're getting more!  This is like getting an extra birthday.

2. Seeing John Barrowman's glee on twitter is gorgeous.  JB is, by all accounts, a lovely person and kind to his fans, and he works his ass off. He loves playing this character. I think I'm happier for him than anything. 



3. Gwen has always been one of my favorite characters (from Day One. Heh.)  I'm overjoyed that the naysayers who thought she wasn't "Hollywood enough"-- what does that even mean, not blonde and a size negative zero? -- were wrong.  I miss her argue-face, her ADORABLE WELSH VOWELS and shiny hair and buckle-y boots.

4. It sounds like PC Andy will be back (this wasn't announced by the PR pros, but he's really happy about the new series and we can guess why. MORE WELSH VOWELS. Also: adorable. Also: funny. Also: I want Tom Price to get a check.

5. By extension, I'm assuming Rhys will be back, too. (VOWELS, ADORABLE, etc.)  AND I AM MEETING KAI AT DRAGON*CON I CANNOT WAIT FOR REALZ!

6. Even if the storyline is similar to CoE and involves an implausible alien and a bunch of government functionaries I could give two shits about, it'll reveal more canon about Captain Jack, maybe some backstory, and maybe we'll find out about those missing two years. And about what Jack's been doing since he fled Earth, and WTF happened there.



7. Captain John is still out there somewhere. (Oh, look! My First Ship!  *nostalgic*)



8. And so's Chris Chibnall.

9.  I can continue to not watch the Confidentials, because I really only care about what's on the screen anyway.

10. It's not going to be on Fox, which is great. The last awesome thing Fox brought us was the X-Files, and I didn't see lightning striking twice there.

11. I get to watch something first for a change, on my big-ass flatscreen, instead of a laptop download and DVD ages later. But I will buy the DVDs, because I support my shows. 

12. I'm not deeply into any other fandom, besides Doctor Who, and this is a Whoniverse programme. I care about the leads.  I like other shows, but I don't have a huge desire to write thousands of words of fic for them, not to mention RP, art, going to conventions, etc.  So of course I'm fuckin' happy!  I'm still writing stories about Owen and Tosh and Ianto -- I miss them, but they're still always part of the canon.

Basically, I woke up like this:  WHEE!

I second your squee, while crossing fingers hard that RTD wants Captain John back. I know JM would play the part again in a flash, because he's said so many times.

Really delighted also that RTD says Jack's sexuality isn't going to be toned down.

I am slightly worried that they'll want Eve Myles to fix that gap in her teeth. They won't, will they?

The news has made me happier than I thought it would. When the rumors started flying about a possible reboot -- TW USA from the ground up, even with CJH -- I kept thinking, NO.

At least let us keep our Gwennie and the supporting characters we love! And who knows? Captain John would be awesome, but maybe freelancers Martha and Mickey could put in an appearance too??? Or Sarah Jane? With all the characters apparently discarded by DW, there's room for more alien fighters to join the show!

But really, it's all about Jack for me; painful as it's been to say goodbye to the other characters, there's only one Jack, and he's simply one of the best characters ever to grace the screen, and I want him back.

I was reading a reaction post elsewhere, and someone who doesn't like the show was claiming that since "the entire cast is gone," "what the hell is there to do" with the show? I didn't reply to that comment, but I was thinking along the lines of:
Entire cast, gone? Jack, Gwen, and Rhys are still around! Are they not part of the cast?

As for where there is to go with the show, plenty of places! Just as a quick and simple idea, have them fight off another alien invasion. (Only not as boring as that just sounded.) There are not a lot of limits to a show like this one, and hardly ANY stories have been told so far. Anyone who thinks there's nothing left to do is showing a major lack of creativity.

I personally am thrilled that there will be more TW. I'm now even more excited about the fact that two major TW cast members will be at Chicago TARDIS in November. :D

I appreciate that for a lot of people, losing Ianto, Tosh and Owen, and the Hub was just... too much and they're not interested anymore. And that's ok. I still love the remaining characters and the concept soooo much, though.

Your enthusiasm has made me so happy I can't tell you. I have avoided all comms the last two days as there are so many negative comments. I want Torchwood back and can never get enough Jack. Shows change and evolve, characters come and go, but we're still allowed to love them.

I love the reasons you've given here and hearilly second them all. Well, apart from the sort of US specific ones...

And you are in for such a treat when you meet Kai. I'm not really a huge "yey! for meeting famous people" person, but Kai is officially the lovliest man alive. Well, you know, I get that; I wasn't particularly excited about seasons of the X-Files without Mulder in them, you know? I'm not out to... what is the opposite of weeing in someone's Cheerios? Shooting sparkles on their wastepaper basket? Can't tell anybody how to feel about things.

So if someone's not going to watch, okay! But yeah, a lot of people are happy to see Jack and the other cast back.

I am really glad that Jack is going to be back - and not in a watered down fashion either but I am almost half scared to look forward to it, not knowing what other death, destruction and bleakness Uncle Rusty is going to pile on us. If I look forward to seeing Rhys and Andy again, I'm half convinced that will mean they'll be killed off and I don't want to lose them too!

RTD said the new series is going to be dark and I for one am heartily fed up of unrelenting dark in Torchwood. I want some hope - and not just for one character - and a little bit of light! Is that to much to ask for? CoE was a damn fine piece of telly but it was so unremittingly bleak that I'm not sure I could deal with more of the same.

At least I know Jack will survive and I'm fairly certain Uncle Rusty will never kill off his darling Gwen either. I just hope that whoever is writing makes her character grow from where it was in CoE as I actually liked her in that, rather than turning the clock back to when I found her annoying as hell.

In the meantime I'm going to enjoy everyone else's squee and try to remain hopeful because there's one amazing thing in all of this... Captain Jack is back!

I am kind of... well, Suzie shot Jack and then herself in the first episode, so I expect a certain amount of "this is messed up shiz" from Torchwood.

That said, I don't LIKE seeing any characters die, and I miss the other team members quite a bit... and it was worse seeing fandom friends upset or even leave TW fandom because their fave characters were gone.

I don't really plan to get deeply invested in what I think will happen in the future for any characters (I'm already Jack-invested, though!) And yes, I don't think RTD will kill off Gwen, even in the last episode of the show, unless she's aged forward to 80 or something.

Gwen is the equivalent of my favorite companion on Doctor Who for me (actually, I dig all the companions). So I'm incredibly happy to have her back, too.
