I didn't get around to posting thoughts on The Eleventh Hour, but I LOVED IT.  I went in wanting to like Eleven and Amy Pond and I really did.

From [livejournal.com profile] doctorwho : Conservative UK press wanks about Amy's short skirt in the first episode of the new series. Fans, predictably, bring the LOL W/E! at how ridiculous this is.   (Nice one, SFX Magazine. Not even subliminal.)

Also, I really liked the TARDIS; the 80's clock radio flip numerals (I HAD that clock in school!), the integrated typewriter... it's like the TARDIS rebuilt itself based on the idea that the Doctor went to Earth a lot, so put all of these little EARTH THINGS in it.

Really silly little thing, but I dig the fact that in the first episodes of the new series of Doctor Who and Torchwood, we have female leads running around the corridors of a hospital where they shouldn't be, chasing and being chased by an alien, dressed in copper clothes. :D :D

...makes cosplay easier, doesn't it?

The other OTHER things are the dated staff badge Rory (the Raggedy Doctor forced cosplayer himself) has (issued 1990? WHAT. That doesn't make sense with the technology in the show being present-day and his age.

Speaking of technology, Geoff's "MΨth" brand computer is interesting. The "Ψ" is the Greek Psi - kind of a common sci-fi shorthand for, well, a lot of things. Plus, it was on some of the hospital tech. Obvious pointing.  Yay for mytharcs! (or mΨtharcs.)

Yeah, I'm kind of WTF about the whole short skirt thing. I mean, haven't any of these people seen pictures of Old Who costumes. Seriously, during the Second and Third Doctor eras, there were multiple companions who wore mini-skirts WAY shorter than Amy's, and panty-shots were not uncommon. And then the Fourth Doctor had Leela...

I think that after the Fourth Doctor they tried to tone down the sexy outfits because they suddenly got worried that people would start shipping the Doctor with his companions if they appeared too sexy -- especially since Peter Davison was so young. (Davison wasn't actually allowed to touch any of the female companions affectionately -- he could help them up if they fell over, but he couldn't hug them or even pat them on the back to congratulate them.) Of course, after RTD, everyone knows that Doctor/Companion shipping is inevitable (although I really really hope that the Doctor and Amy have a platonic relationship).

Yeah, Leela! Exactly!

I'm not sure why shipping is a "problem". I love shipping even when there's only a tiny bit of subtext. *glee*

If there's an actual relationship, not so much. I'm weird that way.

Yeah, I agree. I mean, I like shipping the Doctor with certain companions and writing fic about them, but I wouldn't want it to happen in canon. With my remark about Amy, I meant that I didn't want it to be constructed as a Great Romance in-show, in the way that Doctor/Rose was (and I have nothing against Doctor/Rose, btw -- I just think that story's been told).

I always prefer UST in the source text to a grand romance. Totally agree!

(I don't have anything against Doctor/Rose either, especially if Jack's thrown in!)

The only good thing to ever come out of the Daily Mail is the Peanut comic strip, but I am amused by the idea that wearing a short skirt makes you slutty. Have we suddenly returned to the 1950s?

Didn't papers like the Telegraph concern themselves with actual real news once upon a time? Sigh.

Nice write up. My fav Torchwood LOL moment though? The bit with the beans. "Evil beans" Who didn't watch COE Day Three and think that beans were indeed evil? Talked to a couple of people about this and I so hope it was a nod and not a silly coincidence; it makes me far happier that way!

PS...my folks get the Daily Mail, and the day before it had been raving about how good the new show was; then the next day it decided it was too sexy. Though to be honest, I didn't actually read the article I'm just paraphrasing the headline...

I feel like I'm the only one who didn't, and still doesn't, really think the beans had anything to do with CoE.

I think it's just a case of people (including myself) focusing on what was the last bit of humour in that series. For a programme that had always mixed humour and drama so well, it is the last example of "old" Torchwood that I think remains. From then on the last remaining three characters from a group we all enjoyed watching were all changed forever. Even if Torchwood comes back (which I still hope it does) it will be different as three team members are gone and Jack and Gwen will both be different people.

Well, that's why I hang onto the bean moment anyway...

I could buy it as a valid argument if it had just been the beans, I think, but there was at least half a dozen different foodstuffs and he had horrid reactions to all of them. I mean, he threw a piece of bread and butter out the door and yelled "And stay out!" To me, it rings on the same lines as the people who insisted the BBC's review of portrayal of homosexuality was to do with Torchwood. It was a response to a few very specific instances of quite offensive behaviour. Considering most people can't even agree whether or not CoE was, in itself, homophobic, I was actually sort of offended myself at the claim that it was the reason, or part of the reason, behind the review. Both views seem like a huge stretch to me, and that stretch is a large part of what's really put me off the fandom over the last year.

The badge -- can't believe that's incidental since they had to actually make it as a prop, so am curious where this will lead to. Same with the Myth thing. Hope people still like Mytharcs after Bad Wolf and Vote Saxon and whatnot. LOL

I'm pretty sure that's ESM, but eh, would need a better screencap. I do hope this isn't the last of porn-watching Geoff and his MΨthic laptop.

I approve of beginning every series with a fetching Celtic lass in a copper's uniform. This would appear to create instant UST, food for ficcers far and wide!

Actually, in the Guardian interview, Moffat said something like: "I bet kids would like to see Captain Jack meet the Doctor".

Not just kids, Moff!

But the quote seemed to suggest it would be in a later series if it happened at all.

Yeah, I kinda think that Moff wants to "own" the series before bringing back any of the RTD-era companions for repeats. But apparently he and RTD have discussed doing more x-overs, especially if TW and SJA stay on the Beeb.

EGGSACTLY. The biggest reason he gets a chance to prove himself in my book...and from that point of view, the fact that he's obviously recycling some of his old material might not be a bad thing, hmm? Really, I'd give anything to have Jack back on the show.

I also note that the guest stars for the finale haven't been announced yet. JUST SAYIN'.

Ooh, the psi thing is interesting!

I have to admit, the dating of the episode interests me greatly, since the main part of it *had* to be set roundabout now due to the technology, but they then moved forward two years so once again we are now presumably setting any more Earth episodes in 2012. Which is interesting since we've already had two lots of visits to 2012 (Dalek/The Long Game and Fear Her). It's obviously a popular year for the Doctor!

Also, this means he originally crash landed at the start of the episode back in 1998, thus potentially risking crossing his own timeline!

The Daily Mail spun the their Wheel of Outrage and it landed on Our Crumbling Moral Standards, I see. At least it gives the immigrants, the paedophiles, the gays, the chavs, the poor, and the eternal clamour to bring back hanging for juvenile offenders a break for the day.

Oh, man. All the wank about her short skirt and the kissogram stuff makes me want to punch someone. It's so... stupid. I think a lot of it was meant to show that Amy had grown up and was no longer the little kid sitting on her suitcase and pining for the Doctor (okay, she was probably still pining :p).

It's not like there was a sex scene, FFS. I mean, the way girls YOUNGER than Amy dress today... compared to that, what Amy was wearing is tame!

I totally noticed the MΨth logo too! That puzzled me a bit since usually they either use a brand name or the computer doesn't have any kind of markings on it. I love mytharcs. :D
