Do they have a point? I was going to do a poll, but LJ is being very naughty about polls.

What are your thoughts? Should fic writers mention foreskins more often (for characters who are likely to be uncut?)  Do you not need or want this detail? Do you assume they're there anyway, depending on how you imagine the characters and who they are? Is this something you've never really considered, either way?

The comments make me paranoid about my own porn. Because, hi, ginormous queer who writes more from research (which includes seeing what/how other people write porn) more than experience.

But then, I think I'm ok, because the porn I write is pretty detailed in descriptions of everything, so leaving foreskins out of intricate descriptions seems wrong.

And I'm pretty anti-circumcision generally, but that's not why I write about foreskins in my porn. I think it's more of a problem with the writing when the author is writing about foreskins simply because they're anti-circumcision, and therefore using the story as a vehicle for that opinion rather than it being relevant/appropriate to mention that detail of anatomy right there.

So like, in summary, foreskins aren't icky, and I think they should be written where appropriate (and as someone who is a stickler for cultural accuracy too, I agree to an extent with the post secret-er). The problem is when the fourth wall gets a hole in it and what I'm reading is quite obviously the author's soapbox as opposed to a work of fiction I'm being carried away to.

The comments here surprised me, too, because part of me went, "we are talking about porn in which people have sex and get their dicks out and fuck with them and it is noticable when a guy is still soft and it is fun to play with and if someone is getting someone uncut hard they would play with it and how can you not mention it then?" I'm just surprised how many people write porn and say "but oh no, I don't care about the genitalia, I don't need to know about that detail, I don't want to know" ... because uh ... wow. You don't? I do. I kind of like those details.

Yeah I'm umm- I don't see why it should be explicitely mentioned if there is no need for it, but ... yeah I'm not quite sure how can even even around mentioning it when you describe a blowjob in detail on a guy who is uncut.

Or yknow, if the porn is hot to me, if you don't write that kind of detail, actually.

I just like details in my porn. Not grand broad descriptions of sex acts in 2 paragraphs. I mean -- I read porn for the porn and that's ... cocks and vaginas and things. I like to know.

ALSO what strikes me after reading all the comments here - perhaps there needs to be a story where Ianto realises that Jack can't possibly be from America Jack is uncut? Maybe this is a relevant detail to share during the team's over-lunch discussions about Jack's mysterious background. And Ianto can declare on the tail of it, "which is why I think he's from space", naturally making the rest of them EVEN MORE CURIOUS as to where THAT conjecture came from.
