She heard a whirring sound, then a click, and stirred awake.
“Jack, what’s that… noise?” Oh, no, not again.
She hid her face with one hand, pulled the covers up with the other.
“Put that camera away, you daft Yank.”
“You looked as pretty as a picture just now, and I wanted to remember you like that.”
Estelle waved a slim arm over the top of the blanket, exasperated.
“And what’s the matter with your memory? I suppose you’ll take that film down to the chemist’s and give him the shock of his life.”
“Suppose I did, Miss Cole? These would make awfully nice postcards for the fellas at the front.”
“You!” She flushed and rose to her knees indignantly. “That’s all right for them, but I could never leave this house again without a mask.”
“It’s for the war effort!” Jack protested, laughing.
He laughed even more when she claimed the Brownie camera, turned the lens his way and gave chase.
