I don't want to go off on a long ramble about Gwen-hate, especially because you specifically said no wank in the comments, but I feel that there is a lot of hatred for her simply because she has traits that would be adored in a male character. And then of course, the sociological part of me wants to connect this all to internalized misogyny and gender-phobia in general among the populace. XD
I do tend to think that a lot of the refusal to write Jack/Gwen is masked by the excuse that "Gwen is married, and Rhys is so awesome!" If Ianto was married and his wife was awesome, I bet there'd still be "Janto." ;)
I really want to do a study of this kind of thing someday.
Oh no... I don't consider this this topic to be wanky, 'coz it's not harshing squee. :D I was thinking more along the lines of ship!wank and "people who like Ianto/Owen are insaaaaane", etc.

I believe you are correct. Maybe there would be more JacOwen. Harkper? O God.
Rhys is pretty awesome, though. I do feel sort of bad for him when I write Gwen/Other.
I still do it, though! Because he's fictional! :)
And yes on Gwen's traits. Though it might have been different if Suzie had remained on the team, since she apparently didn't have a partner.
I had actually just been pointing out on a message board when someone listed all the negative traits they didn't like in Gwen, and I listed examples of all those exact same traits in Ianto. Gwen has negative traits he doesn't have (and vice versa), but if you want to complain about Gwen, saying she's a liar and a cheat aren't the ones to say if you don't want it come back at you, because Ianto did those exact same things. Well, the latter if you take to the idea that Jack and Ianto were at it prior to Cyberwoman, which is incredibly popular among the J/I crowd.
Plus, everyone is a liar and a cheat in some way. ;) I seriously think people come down way too hard on her. She's a fictional character with very human traits! Relax a little! XD
Especially in research on leadership you'll find a lot on this, generally though, the most successful leaders are the ones with equal typically masculine and typically feminine traits, but women are then rated as less likeable and men as more likeable. DOn't ask me to quote a study, I'd have to read up on it again.
