I think I've done this meme before. Anyway, I hope everyone does it so I can catch up on the stories I've missed!

In 2010 I wrote 14 stories, totaling 32,400 words (plus Yuletide, but I'm not counting that yet, or WIPs).  So. Fewer stories, but more words than last year, but there is a lot of shortfic. The things I co-wrote, with XT, Shane, Sam and Anya, were the best and the most fun.  <3  I also loved beta-reading for so many awesome writers;  thank you for letting me read your stuff first involving me in your fiction-writing process.

My first femslash and a ton of threesome action. (You have to say action like Alicia Bridges. ACK-SHON!)

Connected - Torchwood - (canon pairings)
It took almost dying to make him realise what living really meant

At the Still Point - TW/Doctor Who - (Ten/Jack) with [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge and [livejournal.com profile] shane_mayhem
On the eve of regeneration, the Doctor has one last gift for Jack. (Go on, guess what it is.)

Keep It Like A Secret - Torchwood -  (canon pairings)
Who'd have thought?  Drabbles about everyone's filthy little secrets. So I guess this is a quintuple-drabble.

Different Strokes - Torchwood - (Jack/Ianto, both genderswitched by alien tech) with [livejournal.com profile] xtricks
6,000 WORDS OF PORN  <3  Seriously, this came from an RP and is part of a larger, plotty arc. It makes me wonder if Jack/Ianto would be a huge pairing in fandom if they actually were women.

99:00 - Torchwood (Ianto/Gwen) - written for [livejournal.com profile] dark_fest
The more things change, the more they stay the same (This ate my head for a month and I'm sorry my friends had to endure my interminable whining over it. Still the longest story I've ever written.)

Thursday night is definitely must-see TV on NBC again, with Community, 30 Rock and the Office. I'm not loving Outsourced, but I like the Indian cast. The writing is just. No. OH GOD, CASH CAB with Tracy and "when it rains it pours" and  Jack's "taped for posterity and his unborn son" monologue on 30 Rock...

The Donaghys originally come from Ireland’s little-known County Steve, where we were whiskey testers and goblins. I was raised in Sandchester, MA, I won the Amory Blaine Handsomest Scholarship to Princeton, and then attended Harvard Business School where I was voted…Most.

[livejournal.com profile] lionessvalenti  has White Collar Alex/Kate fic for you! (And more... check out the header) and it's an awesome "explainer". I love it so hard when writers pick a few lines and show us what the hell happened. From Copenhagen With Love is here.

My Yuletide is posted! Which doesn't mean I won't add a better title over the weekend, should one come to mind.

I owe several fic writers I adore the attention of mah eyeballs, but I'm holding out until series are finished and until I finish this pile of fudge...

Am reading Illuminating Torchwood:  Essays on Narrative, Character and Structure in the BBC Series by Andrew Ireland at the moment.

Has anyone else checked this one out?   Snippet from the 'Love The Coat' chapter, from Christopher Pullen:

Ignoring for a moment the fact that Suzie's name is spelled wrong, this is interesting.  Hells's bells, I am meta-starved.

Will probably post a review next week.

I love it when songs I like make it into mainstream adverts. Sue me. (I'm not going to buy these things, but I like music I LIKE in the ads.)

Vampire Weekend for Tommy Hilfiger in a Wes Anderson ripoff homage.

And Pomplamoose for Hyundai. POMPLAMOOSE! )

Inexplicably awesome image of the day: Torchwood with Muppets and light sabers.

Yup. Both inexplicable AND awesome.  What sort of Charlie's Angels thing is Naoko doing there? (I think I've seen this before. Am I high or has this been around?)

Thank you in advance for choosing one of these fandoms. I bet I'll love whatever you come up with.

I've been watching too much Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern, so what I'd do would depend on how much protein the jailers were throwing my way.
Did you see the Halloween episode where he served his party guests Masai-style cattle blood cocktails? The idea does gross me out, but you know, the Masai have a very low rate of heart disease.

You know what's even better than vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce?

Vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce and pretzels. \O/

God, I've been craving chocciy like nobody's business - I had a Heath bar this weekend. And I'm not even menstrual.

I'm behind on everything. I'm sorry. And I started writing a "let's pretend we're married" fic tonight.  I blame the X-Files Arcadia episode and that Prince song.

But... god, I love that trope.

Am working on an exchange story for [livejournal.com profile] tw_femficfest  and it's femslash!yay!

Am relieved I have until January to finish the Torchwood/Talented Mr Ripley crossover for [livejournal.com profile] reel_torchwood   It is entirely written in my head with about 400 words committed to print. :D

In the meantime, [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge  wrote a Merlin fic, Advisor To The King,  that ends with Arthur/Gwen/Merlin. :D  YAY!   I am so into MMF right now it's not funny. There is also explicit M/M in it and hello.

And my go-to smut writer, [livejournal.com profile] xtricks , penned "Ianto is everyone's sex slave" from a kinkmeme prompt. OMG. Weekly View. (HOT. JESUS GO READ IT.)

And it's [livejournal.com profile] thaddeusfavour 's fault I am buying flatware.  That and the fact that I'm drunk and have a credit card and because I am always running out of fucking forks.

I made Giada De Laurentiis' Greek Caponata tonight.   Recipe here -  and damn, it was so good.  Especially the hot eggplant chunks.

This recipe made the house smell fantastic less than ten minutes after it went into the oven.  I did replace the sourdough with toasted Italian bread, which I did in a skillet, Texas toast-stylee.

I cannot tell you how weird it is to see my journal title as the title of the Writer's Block for today.  It's really messing me up!  :D

That said, Return of the Mack by Mark Morrison calls to mind clubbing back when I wasn't TOO OLD TO BE IN THE CLUB.

(I'm not old, just too old to be in the club.)  I don't particularly yearn for the past, though.

Via [livejournal.com profile] lipsum  - this might be the best Halloween costume EVER!  Boudicca!

Frida Kahlo is also pretty cool. :D

Are you going anywhere for Halloween/do you dress up?  I think I'll just be opening the door this year and handing out noms to beggars.

Blogger Courtney Stoker recently posted an entry on Geek Feminism addressing female characters and the misogyny sometimes displayed when people don't connect with them.  I linked this on twitter the other day, and I do agree with many of the points made in the piece. Whether you do or not, it bears thinking about why no male characters in our fandom are the subject of hate comms.

I came from Buffy fandom and X-Files fandom, I tend to love and give the benefit of the doubt to the female characters in my shows, and I simply do not buy the argument that a faily action in the first season/series makes a character unlikeable rather than interesting -- or that the spite and vitriol have nothing to do with shipping.

A screed of my own is sitting on my notepad, but character hate just makes me itchy, and I don't like to focus on negative things or waste any more time thinking about Gwen or River or Uhura (or Sara on White Collar or Gwen from Merlin) bashers. They creep me the fuck out. End of.  I simply don't care about your lengthy list of justifications for disliking these characters, because they're similar in every fandom where this exists. If you're a basher, you creep me the fuck out.

I do, however, also feel a bit of pity for those who make negativity or hatred such a huge focus of their fandom experience.

Have a picture of Eve and Naoko (and a bellman -- what is he thinking here? ) instead of reciprocal rage.

 - Gwen/Rhys with a bit of Gwen/Jack is [livejournal.com profile] chicleeblair's awesome Big Bang! It's set post-CoE and is just fab.

Beautiful by [livejournal.com profile] wynkat_writes. -Jack/Ianto. Uber hot. Read the warnings! :D

On writing:

House writer Doris Egan, ([livejournal.com profile] tightropegirl ) who will be writing for Torchwood S4.  She has a post up about continuity and the care writers take to make sure things fit together for the viewer, but makes a very good point:

“I'm not saying there may not be continuity issues, here or elsewhere; but it's also legitimate to note that when characters speak colloquially they talk the way people talk -- they round numbers up or down, and they joke. I've never forgotten that once on the X-Files Mulder told his ex-girlfriend, "I'm cursed with a photographic memory." I assumed at the time he was saying in his smartass way that he couldn't forget the hurt she'd caused him, and I was taken aback by the number of fans who interpreted it absolutely literally and felt it was later contradicted by canon. I'm not saying that it might not have turned out to be literal; I'm just saying that when people talk, they don't speak with the exactitude of Wikipedia. Similarly, when a woman says that she's 38, one may choose to believe it or not. When the guy fixing my sink argues with me about the cause and says, "Look, lady, I've been doing this for 20 years," I don't count backwards to exactly that month 20 years before and assume that's when he got his plumbing license."

See, I LIKE the ambiguity. I follow canon events very closely, but the characters DO speak colloquially. And sometimes they make shit up when flirting, or because they're trying to impress their boss. Or because they're lying liars who lie.

...though I'm totally guilty of taking Mulder's eidetic memory and running with it as a fan! Because it's a fun detail and it can be milked for angst! :D

I have... thoughts about the blog piece on anti-Gwen/anti-River and general anti-female character sentiment. Posting about that later.

[livejournal.com profile] neifile7 's [livejournal.com profile] retconbookwrite  story is up!   Recitative and Duet is based on the Torchwood novel Into The Silence and Ianto and Jack are  brilliant here. It's just vividly drawn, and you don't have to read the book to get the fic.

Anya also went to the Toronto Film Festival last week and saw Never Let Me Go.  I hadn't even heard of the book, by Kazuo Ishiguro (Remains of the Day)  since I apparently live under a massive boulder, so I read it and loved it, but can really see that I'll really like the film, not... more than the novel, but yeah, actually, perhaps more than the novel, because I see things I read on a mental projector.

Here's the trailer. NOTE: it's an incredibly spoilery trailer. I'm not sure I'd have given this much away in a preview, Fox Searchlight!

There's an idea I've been brewing for an original story and I think it needs to be a screenplay. I read so much, but I think/create mostly in dialogue and actor business and images.  My descriptive abilty feels weak when it comes to prose.  If I ever do finish a novel and I luck out to an unimaginable degree and someone else gets to write the screenplay... oh. WHAT. Sadface!

There are quite a few books  I would like to adapt for the screen, though!

So how about you? If you haven't written original fiction yet, or if you have, would you rather write a book or a play or a film, and why?
51stcenturyfox: (Oooh!)
