I don't want to go off on a long ramble about Gwen-hate, especially because you specifically said no wank in the comments, but I feel that there is a lot of hatred for her simply because she has traits that would be adored in a male character. And then of course, the sociological part of me wants to connect this all to internalized misogyny and gender-phobia in general among the populace. XD
I do tend to think that a lot of the refusal to write Jack/Gwen is masked by the excuse that "Gwen is married, and Rhys is so awesome!" If Ianto was married and his wife was awesome, I bet there'd still be "Janto." ;)
I really want to do a study of this kind of thing someday.
