I just use Jack/John and disclaimer it. Not perfect but I want readers to visualize these two characters easily. But I've seen other methods done to better effect.
I thought with the James Harper alias Jack used, there must be some as yet unexplained but convenient affinity for JH names. Plus "John Hart, note the sarcasm" could be interpreted in different ways.
